Royal Wine For a Royal Wedding: What Prince Harry & Meghan Markle Served

Royal Wine For a Royal Wedding: What Prince Harry & Meghan Markle Served

Date: May 24th, 2018 Author: Giles Cadman Categories: Tasting Notes , Wine, What's New With Wine

As I’m sure you know – as if there was a way you could have avoided it – the royal wedding took place this past weekend at Windsor Palace. Prince Harry and American actress Meghan Markle (a former Torontonian!) tied the knot as millions watched at home.

The pair’s love story has captivated hearts across the globe. Sure, it was an exciting weekend. But the only thing I was really interested in was what type of wine they would serve at the wedding. Finally, after much speculation, the Champagne has been revealed…

According to Forbes, the official Champagne was Pol Roger Brut Réserve, which was also served at Prince William and Catherine’s wedding in 2011. If this doesn’t classify as a ‘Royal Champagne,’ I’m not sure what does!

Buckingham Palace released the choice in a statement but the other wines and spirits remain a mystery, although the Queen no doubt would be tucking into some Warner Edwards Gin. In my opinion, there must have been at least one British sparkling wine, such as Nyetimber, featured, because of the variety’s increasing popularity and production.

Of course, I’m not usually one that follows this sort of this thing. But I did find the speculation to be quite interesting. In fact, it got me thinking about the types of wine I would have chosen if I were in charge. So, here they are!

My ‘Royal Recommendations'…

Harlan Estate, 1994

Harry and Meghan would have imbibed and savoured Californian royalty, in the shape of the great Cabernet wines of Harlan Estate! Perhaps they would appreciate the legendary 1994, described by Robert Parker as close to “immortality in the glass." He even went as far as to say, “It might be the single most profound red wine made not just in California, but in the world.”

Marcassin, Chardonnay Marcassin Vineyard 2012

As for white wine, I would choose to serve a delicious white from California (rumoured to be Megan’s favourite). The 100-point-perfection of the 2012 Marcassin Chardonnay from Sonoma Valley would be right at home in the glasses of the royals.

Robert Parker, who assigned the perfect rating, called it, “An array of exquisite quality that really must be tasted to be believed.”

Nyetimber, Classic Cuvée, MV

Of course, Harry and Meghan are now the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, the home county of Nyetimber. (We all know about my love of Nyetimber because I’ve written about the Rosé numerous times). Not serving the UK’s premium sparkling wine would surely be a major faux-pas. The lovely, award-winning English sparkling wine is a bit spicy with aromas of honey, almond, and baked apple. A truly delicious wine and one of my favourites.

Bonus Recommendation:

Harry and Meghan actually could have extended the royal connection further. The fabulous Sharpham Winery is in Totnes, located within the ancient lands of the Royal Duchy of Cornwall. Harry’s father Charles is not just the Prince of Wales!
