How to be Successful and Still be Human

How to be Successful and Still be Human

Date: January 31st, 2018 Author: Giles Cadman Categories: How To Be Successful And Still Be Human

If I see another post on my Facebook feed saying something along the lines of, “Give up these 5 things in order to be successful,” I think I will have to throw my new iPhone away and move off the grid!

Yes, I understand that everyone gets a little hyper around the end of one year and the start of another. People seem to think that the way they end 2017 will have a startling impact on 2018, which isn’t necessarily true.

Now, don’t get me wrong – I’m all for making resolutions and setting ambitious goals. But being realistic with these goals and understanding we’re all only human is the best way to go about it. This is why I’m angered when I see posts telling me all the things I shouldn’t be doing. Good advice is all fine and well, but why is a complete stranger telling me how to live my life?

With that being said, there are some positive traits it doesn't hurt if we learn about. But I do hope I don’t see any more posts telling me how many hours of sleep I need until at least 2020!

What should you do to be successful this year?

Being successful is about figuring out what doesn’t work for you, devising a new plan, and trying it again. Being successful means to be human and making mistakes, as long as you learn from them, is natural. The latest studies show managers who demonstrate empathy and compassion influence employees to stay in roles longer and work harder to fix tough issues.

The data is there: being human is actually good for business.

What can you expect from this series?

Well, let’s start with what not to expect! I’m not going to ramble about the bad habits you need to give up or how your revenue forecast needs to be done this way and not that.

What I will share is good, solid advice about being successful in perhaps non-conventional ways, such as putting people and their interests first. I’ll share 8-10 different things I do in order to be successful, including:

  • Taking long vacations with family
  • Not being available all the time
  • Being selective with email
  • Keeping interesting hobbies
  • Pivoting the business if something isn’t working

Each of the bullets listed above has significantly helped me stay sane, successful, and human while running my businesses. I’ll go into these crucial items, and probably more as I think of them.

Well, I’m glad I’ve got this off my chest and that I won’t be moving or throwing my phone away anytime soon. As always, stay tuned for the next in this series!
